Testing for gonnorhea

Gonorrhea is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted disease which is caused by a bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Testing for gonorrhea is important because of this high prevalence. It usually spreads through sexual activity involving the anus, the penis, the vagina and/or the mouth. This is because the perfect conditions for it to grow and increase in number are warmth and moisture found in these areas.

Testing for this disease is especially crucial when one begins to experience pain or burning when urinating or if one observes a discharge from the penis. In the case of women, this discharge is observed to be more than usual or some vaginal bleeding even when it is not during one’s period. women need to be especially vigilant because the infection tends to have a more severe impact on them than on men.

Effective testing for gonorrhea takes place in most laboratories where a doctor gets a sample fluid from the affected area. Testing helps in the diagnosis of symptoms being experienced and also to act as a screening procedure before a couple engages in sexual activity.

The most commonly used means of testing for gonorrhea is the molecular test. It is highly sensitive to the bacteria causing gonorrhea and the results are therefore more accurate.

In cases where the test comes up positive on the infection, gonorrhea can be treated with a regimen of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Even though the test is negative however, it is important to exercise caution with regard to sexual behavior and also to get tested regularly for screening purposes.
