This is a critical condition of the eye. The fluid pressure increases inside the eyes and this in turn will cause damage to the optic nerve. The increased pressure inside the eye is called intraocular pressure. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting images to the brain. If this nerve is damaged, loss of vision is the result. If proper treatment is not given at the right time the patient will become blind within a few years. Glaucoma can be inherited and the symptoms are expressed only in later stages. So, the diagnosis happens only after certain damage occurs to the eye.
It is necessary to visit the ophthalmologist regularly after 40 years of age and necessary check –up should be done to identify this problem at an earlier stage itself.
Glaucoma happens when the fluid in the interior of the eye called aqueous humor get collected between the cornea and iris of the eye. In normal person this fluid moves out of the eye through small mesh-channels. If the channels in the eye get blocked, then pressure of the liquid increases, thereby causing glaucoma.
Persons with a family history of this condition and diabetic patients are particularly prone to this disease. There are two main types of glaucoma. They are Open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Of these the open angle glaucoma is the common type.
This condition mainly occurs in adults above 40 years of age but sometimes also seen in children and young adults.
